Safer communities thanks to the Grapevine

Barbara Holmes at Holmes and Co., Victoria Street.

Barbara Holmes was just arriving home in Hamilton when she got a call from her son, Brad, from Brisbane.

A post from the Cambridge Grapevine about her Victoria Street store Holmes and Co., had made its way over to him in Brisbane.

And then a call from a customer in Cambridge, and then about four more. Evidently, Barbara and Kaye from the Victoria St store Holmes and Co, had left a table of stock out after leaving for the day.

The table of stock in question was men’s underwear, and to the surprise of anyone who has lived in a big city at some point, the table was waiting for Barbara the next morning.

“We are really, really lucky…anywhere else, they would have just been gone,” said Barbara.

She didn’t need to travel back to Cambridge to rescue the stock, nor did she worry about it being missing. This is Cambridge, after all; the table was bought inside by the staff at ASB, the business next door, for the night.

The tale of the Holmes and Co. underwear speaks to the community spirit of Cambridge, which has a strong network of neighbourhood support.

The table of underwear is still a regular feature on Victoria Street, with knickers going for $5 a pop.
